The unhealthy addiction to the carcinogen known as nicotine is an addiction that has been around for thousands of years. There were many American Indians that smoked tobacco before the European explorers even arrived. The number of men and women all around the world that have lost their life from the chemicals in tobacco is practically immeasurable, and dates back to being used more than 1,500 years ago, as seen in art of the early Mayan. Sailors of the 16th century were commonly known to smoke tobacco. Even more individuals joined in on this destructive habit when smokers of England made the cigar popular in the 1820’s. Not long after this time, the cigarette became well known throughout the area of Spain. When military soldiers of World War I were given rations, it even contained products of tobacco. Cigarette smoking has increasingly become more and more popular over the years, claiming an endless amount of victims along the way that suffered the serious problems that are often caused by this harmful addiction. One interesting fact is that the United States Government has approved more than 599 additives that cigarettes contain, and many of which cause unhealthy and deadly side effects.
